Weary traveler

Image and Words by Emily Sims

Split foundations broken upon time and tide
The soft waves carry our attentions
Where the hearts failed to coincide
Still I waited by the river

I’ll just sit here
Hang my hat on the formation
Of a canal that might never fill
I’ll just sit here in anticipation
Weighted by stone and our living will

We’re only a bandage on a bullet hole
A temporary fix for a tortured soul
Except I didn’t travel this far to
Become another’s replacement
To feel entombed in a passive existence
Dam decomposing in the distance

I’ll just sit here
Hang my hat on the formation
Of a canal that might never fill
I’ll just sit here in anticipation
Weighted by stone and our living will

Wrestled against climate and current
Trusted vessel tossed my frame aside
“This wouldn’t have happened if you were more observant”
Still I proceed into the river
